Dr Victor Chang

Dr. Victor Chang (1936-1991) was a pioneering Australian cardiac surgeon. He is most celebrated for his work in heart transplantation and for establishing the National Heart Transplant Program at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney in 1984. During the 1980s, Chang’s innovative surgical techniques significantly improved patient survival rates after heart transplants. In 1984, he successfully performed one of Australia's first heart-lung transplants. Additionally, Chang also worked on the development of an artificial heart valve. His contributions to cardiac surgery earned him recognition as a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1986. Dr. Chang's groundbreaking work laid the foundation for modern heart transplantation procedures in Australia.
