Biography

Jerome H. Powell (born February 4, 1953) serves as the 16th Chair of the Federal Reserve, a position he has held since February 5, 2018. Appointed by President Donald Trump, Powell succeeded Janet Yellen. He steered the U.S. central bank through significant challenges, including the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, the Federal Reserve implemented unprecedented monetary policies, such as slashing interest rates to near zero and launching large-scale asset purchases to stabilize financial markets. Powell's tenure is also marked by efforts to increase transparency and communication with the public regarding Federal Reserve policies. Before his appointment, Powell was a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, starting in 2012.
