Editorial Note
We searched for a primary source in Depp's own words — interviews with outlets like Rolling Stone and Vogue, film dialogue from his credited roles, published writing, letters, and archival records — and found nothing that ties this line to him. The phrase circulates heavily on quote-aggregation and social-media pages, but those simply copy one another and carry no evidentiary weight. Our book-database review is telling: the line surfaces in several compilations, but the earliest we located, Wendy Weikal-Beauchat's "Courage for the Journey" (2013), credits it to "Unknown," while later books such as Peter Su's 2014 title and various 2024–2025 collections pin it to Depp — a pattern that suggests the Depp attribution was attached after the fact rather than at origin. That "Unknown" attribution predating the Depp label is suggestive, but it names no competing author and does not establish a documented alternative origin, so it falls short of our bar for a genuine dispute or a misattribution finding. A full-text check of books credited to Depp turned up no verbatim match, which is inconclusive given the coverage gaps in such archives. In short, we can neither confirm Depp said it nor point to a specific, named person who demonstrably said it first, which leaves this as a widely repeated but unsupported credit. We are marking this quotation as attributed.
