Jose Saramago (1922-2010) was a Portuguese writer and Nobel laureate, celebrated for his novels that blend magical realism with political commentary. His novel "Blindness" (1995) depicts a society struck by a sudden epidemic of blindness, showcasing his unique narrative style. Saramago won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998, recognizing his ability to illuminate human conditions through his inventive storytelling. Another notable work includes "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ" (1991), which offers a controversial reimagining of the life of Jesus. His distinct voice and imaginative plots have secured his place as a significant figure in contemporary literature. Saramago passed away on June 18, 2010.
