Ahmad Shamlou

Ahmad Shamlou (1925-2000) was an influential Iranian poet, writer, and journalist. He is most celebrated for his modernist poetry and innovative use of free verse, which revitalized Persian literature. His seminal work, "The Book of Alley" (Ketab-e Kucheh), is a comprehensive collection of Persian folklore, idioms, and expressions, reflecting his deep commitment to cultural heritage. In 1957, Shamlou published "Fresh Air" (Hava-ye Tazeh), a groundbreaking poetry collection that broke away from traditional forms and set a new direction in Persian poetry. His involvement in political and social issues is evident in his writing, making him a prominent intellectual figure in 20th-century Iran. Shamlou's dedication to literary excellence earned him the Forough Farrokhzad Literary Award in 1979.
