Geoffrey Chaucer

Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343-1400) was an English poet and author, best known for "The Canterbury Tales," a collection of 24 stories presented as part of a storytelling contest among pilgrims. His works are pivotal in the development of English literature. In 1368, he served as a courtier to the royal family, which provided him with the experience and connections that influenced his writing. Chaucer's notable accomplishments include "Troilus and Criseyde," a tragic love poem, and his involvement in translating significant works such as Boethius’s "The Consolation of Philosophy." His role as a customs official and justice of the peace in Kent further distinguished his varied career. Chaucer was buried in Westminster Abbey, marking him as the first poet to be interred in what is now known as Poets' Corner.
