Rabbi Hillel

Rabbi Hillel the Elder (c. 110 BCE - 10 CE) stands as one of Judaism's most prominent sages. He founded the House of Hillel, a school of thought characterized by its emphasis on compassion and humility. Hillel's most notable accomplishment is his formulation of the Seven Rules of Hillel, a set of principles for interpreting Jewish law. He also served as the Nasi, or president, of the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish legislative and judicial body. His famous maxim, "What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow," encapsulates his ethical teachings. Hillel's contributions significantly shaped Jewish tradition and law, including his role in establishing the Prosbul, a legal mechanism to prevent debt cancellation during the sabbatical year.
