Biography
Raoul A. Cortez (1905-1971) was a pioneering figure in American broadcasting, best known for founding the first full-time Spanish-language radio station in the United States, KCOR-AM, in 1946 in San Antonio, Texas. This station played a crucial role in serving the Hispanic community, providing news, entertainment, and a platform for cultural expression. In 1955, Cortez expanded his efforts by launching KCOR-TV, the first Spanish-language television station in the U.S., which later became KWEX-TV and part of the Univision network. His work significantly advanced media representation for Spanish-speaking audiences. Cortez's contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including the B'nai B'rith Award for his efforts in promoting cultural understanding.
