Frederick Douglass (c. February 1818 – February 20, 1895) was a prominent American social reformer, orator, writer, and statesman. Born into slavery in Maryland, he escaped in 1838 and became a national leader of the abolitionist movement. Douglass's autobiography, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave," published in 1845, gained widespread acclaim and heightened the visibility of the abolitionist cause.
In 1847, he founded the abolitionist newspaper "The North Star," which became a powerful platform for anti-slavery advocacy. Douglass also played a significant role in recruiting African American soldiers for the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1872, he became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as Victoria Woodhull's running mate on the Equal Rights Party ticket. less
