Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. His most famous works include the novels "Les Misérables" (1862) and "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" (1831). Hugo's writing vividly depicted the struggles of the poor and the injustices of society. In addition to his literary achievements, Hugo was a fervent political activist. He was exiled from France for his opposition to Napoleon III, spending nearly 20 years in Belgium and the Channel Islands. During this period, he wrote some of his most powerful political poetry, including "Les Châtiments" (1853). Hugo returned to France in 1870 and continued to be an influential public figure until his death.
