Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was a French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher, best known for his contributions to probability theory and for inventing the mechanical calculator, the Pascaline, in 1642. His work "Pensées," a collection of fragments on theology and philosophy, remains a seminal text in Western thought. In 1654, Pascal made significant advances in the study of fluids, culminating in the formulation of Pascal's Law, which states that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions. Additionally, his correspondence with Pierre de Fermat laid the groundwork for modern probability theory, which has had lasting impacts on economics and the sciences.
