Desmond Tutu

Desmond Tutu, born October 7, 1931, was a South African Anglican bishop and social rights activist. He gained international prominence during the 1980s for his staunch opposition to apartheid. In 1984, Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in resolving and ending apartheid in South Africa. He served as the first black Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, leading the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. Tutu chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, established in 1995, to address the atrocities committed during the apartheid era. His vocal advocacy for social justice, human rights, and the fight against HIV/AIDS distinguished him as a pivotal figure in contemporary history. Desmond Tutu passed away on December 26, 2021.
