General John Stark

General John Stark (August 28, 1728 – May 8, 1822) played a pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War. Best known for his leadership at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777, Stark's decisive actions there significantly contributed to the defeat of British forces, boosting American morale. Born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, Stark began his military career during the French and Indian War, where he gained valuable experience. In 1777, Stark was appointed brigadier general by the New Hampshire legislature. His strategic acumen was further demonstrated during the Saratoga campaign, where his efforts helped secure a critical American victory. Stark's famous rallying cry, "There they are, boys! We beat them today or Molly Stark's a widow!" epitomizes his determined spirit. He lived the rest of his life in New Hampshire, passing away at the age of 93.
