Editorial Note
We searched Johnny Depp's documented interviews, press appearances, published works, and public commentary on love and relationships across three decades of coverage in outlets like The New York Times, Variety, and Rolling Stone, and found no instance where he said or wrote this line. The wording circulates very heavily online as a Depp quote, but that saturation traces only to quote-aggregator and social-media sources that copy one another without any underlying citation. Notably, when we checked the phrase against published books, the earliest appearances — including Shelia E. Lipsey's "My Sons Next Wife" (2006) and Andria Stennis-Hudson's "He Saved the Best for Last" (2013) — both print it credited to "Unknown," and a later title attaches it to Paulo Coelho, none of which points to Depp or to any single verifiable author. That spread of inconsistent, low-confidence attributions is the ordinary churn of aggregation, not a genuine scholarly dispute with competing credible candidates. Because we found neither a primary source tying the line to Depp nor a documented earlier use by a specific named author that would justify calling it misattributed, the honest treatment is that this is widely credited to him but unsupported. We are marking this quotation as attributed.
