Biography
Dame Maggie Smith, born December 28, 1934, in Ilford, Essex, is a distinguished English actress whose career spans over six decades. She is best known for her roles as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the "Harry Potter" film series (2001-2011) and as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the television series "Downton Abbey" (2010-2015). Smith won Academy Awards for her performances in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (1969) and "California Suite" (1978). Her portrayal of Jean Brodie also earned her a BAFTA Award. In addition to her film and television success, Smith has an illustrious stage career, highlighted by her Tony Award-winning performance in "Lettice and Lovage" (1990).
