Editorial Note
We searched Bourdain's published books — including Kitchen Confidential, A Cook's Tour, Medium Raw, and The Nasty Bits — along with transcripts from No Reservations and Parts Unknown and his documented interviews, and found no instance of this exact sentence anywhere in his own work. A full-text check of several of his books turned up no verbatim match, though gaps in digitized coverage mean that alone settles nothing. The line does surface in a handful of published books, but each merely reprints it as a quotation credited to Bourdain — a trivia collection, a poetry syndication issue, and a medical text (which spells his name "Bourdaine") — none of which is a primary source or offers any citation back to something he actually wrote or said. That pattern, where the line circulates in aggregator-style contexts and gets picked up by later books thematically, is consistent with a quotation that fits Bourdain's reflective, humble-traveler voice but was never actually traced to him. Crucially, none of these secondary appearances names a different, credible originator, and we found no documented earlier use by anyone else, so there are no grounds to call this misattributed rather than simply unconfirmed. On the evidence available, we are marking this quotation as attributed.
