Jean Paul Sartre

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was a French philosopher, playwright, and novelist, chiefly associated with the existentialist movement. He is best known for his philosophical treatise "Being and Nothingness" (1943) and the play "No Exit" (1944). Sartre's existentialism delves into themes of freedom, responsibility, and the nature of human existence. He declined the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, citing his belief that a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution. Sartre also made significant contributions to political theory and was an active supporter of Marxist causes. His lifelong partnership with fellow existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir also marked his intellectual journey.
