This line has long circulated as a Mandela quotation, and it turns up in numerous published motivational books — including Angela Maiers and Amy Sandvold's "The Passion-Driven Classroom" (2017), Julie Tallard Johnson's "The Zero Point Agreement" (2013), and Les Parrott's "You're Stronger Than You Think" (2012) — all crediting Mandela, which tells us the attribution is widespread but not where it came from. Our review of Mandela's autobiography and the major authorized collections did not surface it, which initially pointed toward the "common but unsupported" category, and we noted the reasonable suspicion that it travels alongside Marianne Williamson's "Our deepest fear" passage, itself frequently misattributed to Mandela. The decisive evidence, however, is the official South African government transcript of Mandela's July 16, 2003 speech at the launch of Mindset Network, where these exact words appear as part of his own remarks — importantly, distinct from the Williamson passage he separately quotes in the same address. That transcript is a documented primary source in Mandela's own voice, which resolves the doubt in his favor rather than against him. The fact that he also quoted Williamson in the same speech likely explains why later writers bundled the two lines together, but the sentence in question is genuinely his within that record.
