MISATTRIBUTED

Misattributed
Widely shared under this name, but not theirs.

This quote is commonly circulated under the author's name, but it does not appear in their known works. The true origin is unconfirmed — likely a later paraphrase.

Source
The Whole Earth Catalog, final issue (Whole Earth Epilog: Access to Tools), Fall 1974, back cover, edited/published by Stewart Brand
Editorial Note
Steve Jobs made these four words famous, but he did not write them — and he said so himself. Closing his June 12, 2005 commencement address at Stanford, Jobs recalled The Whole Earth Catalog as a "bible" of his generation and read the line directly from the back cover of its 1974 final issue, describing it as the editors' farewell message as they signed off. The phrase therefore originates with Stewart Brand and his Whole Earth team, appearing in print roughly three decades before Jobs quoted it, printed beneath a photograph of an early-morning country road. Jobs genuinely spoke the words in a fully documented primary source and made them a modern motto, so the line is authentically tied to him as popularizer — but crediting it to him as its author is inaccurate, since a specific earlier source and a named creator both exist. We class it misattributed on the strength of that documented 1974 origin, which Jobs openly acknowledged rather than claimed as his own.
