Editorial Note
This line is most often quoted as the opening of a longer reflection attributed to Helen Mirren — "You write your life story by the choices you make. You never know if they have been a mistake. Those moments of decision are so difficult" — and it circulates widely and consistently under her name across mainstream and motivational outlets. Yet we could not anchor it to a single primary source in her own words: it does not surface in her memoir In the Frame (2007), nor in any documented interview, speech, or broadcast transcript we reviewed. Several printed books do repeat the sentence, some crediting Mirren by name and others using it as a free-floating maxim with no author at all, which tells us this is a portable motivational aphorism rather than a traceable quotation. Importantly, no reputable source proposes a different originator, and nothing shows the words predating Mirren, so there are no grounds to call it misattributed. We therefore record it as attributed — broadly and confidently credited to Helen Mirren, but so far unconfirmed by any primary source in her own voice.
