Biography
Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was the first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India. During her tenure, she implemented significant policies such as the nationalization of banks in 1969 and the Green Revolution, which transformed India's agriculture.
In 1975, she declared a state of emergency, citing internal disturbances, which led to widespread political unrest and curtailment of civil liberties. Despite controversy, she played a pivotal role in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Her leadership style and political maneuvers significantly shaped modern India's political landscape.
