Biography
Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire, is most known for founding the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. This Roman Catholic religious congregation is dedicated to helping the poorest of the poor.
In 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work. Mother Teresa opened hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis. She also established soup kitchens, dispensaries, mobile clinics, orphanages, and schools. Her unwavering commitment to the destitute in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, earned her the moniker "Saint of the Gutters."
She passed away on September 5, 1997, and was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016.
