Editorial Note
This quote is drawn from a Persian ruba'i that appears, in nearly identical form, in the collected works of multiple 12th–13th century Persian mystic poets. The earliest documented version is credited to Baba Afzal Kashani (d. 1213–14) in his Robaiyat (#192); the same quatrain — three of four lines word-for-word identical — also appears in Rumi's Divan-e Shams (Robaiyat #1759), as well as in the collected verse of Owhad al-Din Kermani and Najm al-Din Razi. Since Kashani died before Rumi began writing poetry, Kashani is the more likely original author, though centuries of manuscript transmission make a definitive attribution impossible.
The popular English translation — "Everything in the universe is within you. Ask all from yourself." — comes from Kabir Helminski and Andrew Harvey's The Rumi Collection (Shambhala, 2005, p.73), which credits Rumi. Given the underlying authorship dispute, we list this quote as disputed rather than verified.
