Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work

We searched Einstein's collected writings, correspondence, and interview transcripts — including *The World as I See It* and the Einstein Papers materials — and found no instance of this "1% talent and 99% hard work" formula in any primary source authored by him. What we did find is that this line is a modern paraphrase of a much older and well-documented saying credited to Thomas Edison: "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration," which appears in early-twentieth-century print sources well before any Einstein attribution surfaced. The wording in question simply swaps "talent" for "inspiration" and "hard work" for "perspiration" while keeping the distinctive 1/99 structure, which points squarely to the Edison line as its ancestor. The only books that attach these exact words to Einstein — such as Oliver Gaspirtz's *German Wisdom* (2016) and Sreechinth C's *Einstein Wisdom* — are recent quote compilations that recycle popular attributions rather than trace them, and carry no evidentiary weight against a documented earlier origin. Because a specific, stronger, and demonstrably earlier competing source can be named — Edison's "one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration," in print by the early 1900s — this is not merely an unsupported Einstein credit but a case with a citable alternative origin. On that basis, we judge the Einstein attribution misattributed.
