Biography

Alice Walker, born on February 9, 1944, is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, and social activist. She is best known for her novel *The Color Purple* (1982), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award. Walker's work often explores themes of race, gender, and identity in America. In 1976, she published the novel *Meridian*, which addresses the Civil Rights Movement. Another notable work is *In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens: Womanist Prose* (1983), a collection of essays that coined the term "womanist." Walker’s contributions to literature and activism have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 1985 O. Henry Award for her short story "Kindred Spirits."
