Colin Powell

Colin Powell (1937-2021) served as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, making history as the first African American to hold this position. Born in Harlem, New York, and raised in the South Bronx, Powell graduated from the City College of New York and then embarked on a distinguished military career. He rose to the rank of four-star general in the United States Army and served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993. Powell played a pivotal role during the Persian Gulf War, orchestrating Operation Desert Storm which led to the liberation of Kuwait. His strategic leadership and diplomatic skills were instrumental in shaping U.S. foreign policy during his tenure.
