When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.

We searched Nelson Mandela's published corpus for this line, including *Long Walk to Freedom* (1994), the collected Rivonia Trial statements, and transcripts of his UN General Assembly addresses, and we could not locate this exact sentence in any of them. One of our passes pointed to a passage in chapter 27 of *Long Walk to Freedom* about Mandela's turn to underground resistance, but the actual text there ("a steady accumulation of a thousand slights...") is entirely different wording and does not contain this aphorism. The line does surface in print — notably in Elizabeth Williams's *Black Britain and Nelson Mandela* (2024) and Peter Murphy's novel *A Matter for the Jury* (2014), both crediting it to Mandela around 1994 or 1964 — but these are secondary works quoting the attribution rather than a primary Mandela source, and none cite a specific speech, page, or archival record. The quote is widely repeated across books and websites under Mandela's name, and its sentiment genuinely echoes his defense of armed resistance, yet resonance is not authorship, and the compact, aphoristic phrasing has the feel of a later paraphrase. Importantly, we found no credible competing author or documented earlier appearance that would let us name a different origin, so the strict test for misattribution is not met. Absent a traceable primary source but with no rival claimant either, this remains a case of a persistent but undocumented credit. We conclude this quote is attributed.
