Gabor Mate

Gabor Maté, born January 6, 1944, is a Hungarian-Canadian physician and author recognized for his expertise on addiction, trauma, and childhood development. His seminal work, "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction" (2008), explores the deep psychological roots of addiction. Maté also authored "When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress" (2003), which examines the link between stress and chronic illness. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Maté served as a staff physician at Vancouver’s Portland Hotel, a residence and harm reduction facility. In 2018, he co-founded the Compassionate Inquiry approach, a therapeutic method integrating mindfulness and somatic practices. Maté’s distinctive approach combines scientific research with clinical experience and personal insights.
