Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short story writer, best known for his novel "The Scarlet Letter" (1850). Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Hawthorne's works often explore themes of sin, guilt, and morality, heavily influenced by his Puritan ancestry. Another notable work includes "The House of the Seven Gables" (1851), which reflects his fascination with the supernatural and family curses. His collection "Twice-Told Tales" (1837) established his reputation as a significant literary figure. Hawthorne served as a U.S. consul in Liverpool from 1853 to 1857, appointed by President Franklin Pierce, a college friend. He died in Plymouth, New Hampshire, leaving behind a legacy of richly symbolic and allegorical storytelling.
