ATTRIBUTED

The man who does not make up his mind to cultivate the habit of thinking misses the greatest pleasure in life.

Attributed
Widely credited, but not traced to a source.

This quote is widely credited to the author across popular collections, but we haven't traced it to a primary published source. The attribution is plausible, but unconfirmed — cite it with care.

Editorial Note
We searched Edison's published works, collections of his letters, transcripts of his documented interviews, his lecture and speech records, and archival material from the Edison papers, and we found no primary source containing this exact sentence. The line is widely circulated in modern quotation collections under Edison's name, and it does surface in a couple of compilations — a general quotation anthology and Madan Lal Malhotra's *Perceptions and Perspectives* (1991), which uses it as an epigraph credited to Edison — but neither of those provides an original citation, and both simply repeat the attribution rather than trace it to a documented Edison text. We did note an early-twentieth-century newspaper appearance crediting the line to Edison, which tells us the attribution is not a recent internet invention, but a filler item under his name is not the same as a documented interview, article, or archival record. The sentiment fits Edison's well-known preoccupation with the labor of thinking, which likely helped the line attach to him, but thematic fit is not evidence of authorship. Crucially, we found no citable competing origin and no credible alternative author, so there is no basis for calling this misattributed — the issue is simply an absence of primary verification. On balance, this is a quote commonly credited to Edison but not confirmed by any primary source: attributed.
