Salman Rushdie, born June 19, 1947, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, is an acclaimed author best known for his novel "Midnight's Children" (1981), which won the Booker Prize and the Booker of Bookers. His work often blends magical realism with historical fiction, examining the interplay between Eastern and Western cultures. Another notable work, "The Satanic Verses" (1988), sparked international controversy and led to a fatwa calling for his death, issued by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini. Rushdie's memoir, "Joseph Anton" (2012), provides a detailed account of his life under the fatwa. He was knighted in 2007 for his contributions to literature.
